## Events of June 11, 2026

🔬 The Ushuaia landfill hypothesis recedes as the genome points north (Science, Kai Kupferschmidt, 11 June 2026). No hantavirus has ever been reported around Ushuaia and trapping there caught no long-tailed pygmy rice rat. The passengers' sequences most closely match sequences collected at Villa Meliquina (Neuquén province, more than 2,000 km north) and rodents captured in 2013 in Chile's Araucanía region. The difficulty: the Dutch couple passed through in early February, which would imply a 60-day incubation, with no known precedent. Scenarios still open include a rodent entering their campervan — located in Uruguay, where no obvious rodent traces were found.
